Yoohoo!

I once again haven’t been focusing on Flaminimi dolls this month. I kind of only remembered to put something out for it near the end of July… but a little bit of progress is better than nothing to show.

Last month I introduced my second series of Flaminimis. They’re sleeker and have more of an actual resemblance to me, Flaminia.

Flaminimis

A few months before that I had showed you how I’d made a 3D model of my old paper doll design, AKA the digiflaminimi.

This month I digitized the new design and made a little cover image. I kept the outfit design intentionally simple, and stuck with the sunflower motif as a lazy way to reuse existing textures homage to the original.

Working with simple 3D meshes like this feels a lot like working with paper.

It’s obviously not as practical or simple as just cutting things out and sticking them together. Experimenting with physical materials feels more organic than playing with software.

There are unique pros to working digitally though. The most obvious is that there’s no scraps to clean up after. Beyond just practicalities, I love the creative possibilities it allows. I can copy and paste, scale and distort, shift hues and values. Let’s look at this piece from some other points of view.

The images without color are the wireframes of these models. The points that make up the actual shape.

Looking at it in this view makes it clearer to see how I repeated the same shape to make up so much of the image. Even the shoes were another sunflower that I cut to fit the dolls feet.

The redder sunflowers use the same image, but scaled up large and given a hill shape. The color and value were adjusted using shaders, meaning the computer calculates how to adjust it without affecting the original. I could hypothetically use this to animate color changes.

I’m glad I’ve committed myself to making these updates, both to this somewhat esoteric art project and to the summaries of how it’s going. It forces me to evaluate and plan more objectively. My mind tends to wander without some sort of deadline and format. Even if nobody reads these. Actually by now I assume nobody reads these which is why I feel comfortable rambling a bit ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

This months update has given me a good idea on where to go from here.

I made a basic start to an interactive digital Flaminimi gallery, but I’ve been a bit stumped on how I want to organize it. Making these covers and talking about the process has given me some new ideas on what to try next though. Maybe I’ll tell you more about that in August though. Toodeloo <3
